A prolific 19th-century painter who was once considered "America's first modern" for his prepossessing, flat-color land- and seascapes, Thomas Chambers is now the little-known subject of an impressive revival. This exhibition — the first for the MIA artist since 1942 — features 45 of his vibrant, home-sweet-home compositions, many inspired by the period's open-air etchings and lithographs. Besides his typically patriotic works like The Constitution and the Gurrière (an oceanic composition that led to his rediscovery), the exhibition includes a collection of the era's "fancy" decorative art as well as his contemporaries' striking pieces.
