In Carol Reed's brooding noir, all of 1947 Belfast is on the lookout for IRA leader James Mason. With a bullet lodged in his shoulder — the upshot of a flubbed fundraising hold-up — Mason reels through the city's timeworn archways and back alleys, his lurch toward the inexorable chimes of midnight increasingly halted by an outré hallucination and the schemes of individuals who dot the moral spectrum. Before framing a decayed Vienna for Reed's more-heralded masterpiece, The Third Man, Robert Krasker fences Mason into a grid of shadow, religion, and fog, with a magnificent aerial shot to open the suspense account. Herein, Sir Carol proves to be an expressionistic and perceptive handler of cornered men.
