Blind Lemon Blues shines brightest when the writers let classics by Blind Lemon, Led Belly, and others take center stage. Three chords are rarely as evocotive and theraputic as the 12-bar blues, and it doesn't quite fit when writers Akin Babatunde and Alan Govenar try to toss in one of their show tune/blues hybrids. Still, there is enough call-and-response bliss between an excellent cast — led by Babatunde, Cavin Yarbrough, and guitarist Skip Krevens — to make up for it. The traditional "Midnight Special" bookends the show, evoking pain, struggle, and, ultimately, the joy of creating and embarking on a journey.
