The German artist's second solo exhibition at the Tilton Gallery features paintings of female figures on central display. Lucas' evident confidence with composition and color, framing the subjects into the light, makes for an engaging parallel with the women themselves, who find themselves frozen in thought, and never meet the viewer's gaze. As a result, both entities — the physical object of the painting, and what it represents — seem concomitantly quiet and bold, clear and mysterious.
