Hard-hitting playwright David Mamet adopts a lighter touch with School and Keep Your Pantheon, the two one-acts that make up this amusing, if uneven, evening of theatre. School, a small gem of a play that delves into the absurdity of bureaucracy, is in familiar Mamet territory pitting two characters (known only as A and B) against each other to duke it out. It's highly entertaining, but ends abruptly, leaving Keep Your Pantheon to occupy the majority of the evening. Mamet's far outside his comfort zone with this over-the-top homage to the theatre, set in ancient Rome — and it shows. But excellent performances by Brian Murray and John Pankow (as hack actors who mistakenly end up on the King's chopping block) save the show.
