Scandal strikes the Protestant church in Verdi's opera about the limits of faith. A popular minister, Stiffelio returns home from a preaching tour to find his wife shacked up with Count Raffaele di Leuthold. Mayhem ensues — i.e. botched duels, divorce, murder — which caused the censors back in 1850 to force revisions distancing the characters from the church. Plácido Domingo, who played Stiffelio in Giancarlo del Monaco's 1993 production, conducts this time around.
