Avery Fisher Hall says…

As witnessed during the televised New Year's Eve concert, new NYP Music Director Alan Gilbert and the orchestra's first Artist-in-Residence Thomas Hampson are a good match. The American maestro and baritone are keeping their joint resolution to program domestic music for an organization and subscriber base bewilderingly stubborn toward it. Their choice for this concert couldn't be lovelier: John Adams' The Wound-Dresser is based on Walt Whitman's poem on his time as a Civil War nurse. Written in 1988 when Adams' father was dying, The Wound-Dresser has also come to honor AIDS victims. Plus, in addition to the familiar Schubert and Haydn, the audience gets to hear Berg's splendid Three Orchestral Pieces.
