A winner at both the 2009 Dublin and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, Little Gem comes to the Flea courtesy of the Carol Tambor Foundation's "Best of Edinburgh Award." Produced by Ireland's Guna Nua/Civic Theatre, Little Gem is actress Elaine Murphy's debut play, one structured as a series of monologues delivered by three women from different generations. Each woman shares her version of events — from love to an unexpected pregnancy, to death — in what turns out to be a momentous year for the family. Murphy deftly uses humor and conversational asides to flesh out her characters, but it's the extraordinary actresses who pull it together into a riveting narrative.
