Kim Foster Gallery says…

Although completely abstract, New York artist Augustus Goertz' paintings are not unlike JMW Turner's 18th-century contemplation of the impending clash between magic and modernity. The book Guns, Germs, and Steel by Collapse author Jared Diamond has recently made a great impression on him; and Goertz feels, as did Turner, that the forces of destruction and of beauty must be reconciled, for they are both inevitable. In its way, his new series represents an attempt at forging this synthesis. Finding beauty in unlikely places and engineering it through unlikely means like dirt, plastic soldiers, rust, and impasto so thick, in a palette so earthy that it could easily be mistaken for rocky soil, all combine to offer a beauty that is not a simple pleasure.
