Young Jean Lee's irreverent, deconstructionist take on King Lear is both fascinating and frustrating. The 80-minute, intermission-less play opens midway through Shakespeare's story, after Lear is cast out from his kingdom (he never appears on stage). Instead, Lee's bold choice focuses the action on Lear's daughters, who are portrayed as sadistic mistresses who purr lines like "soon you will understand the sweetness of crying" into the ears of their doting men. Just as the action gets interesting, though, the actors abandon their characters a la Pirandello and launch into heady monologues about the nature of existence only to be interrupted by disjointed antics. While most of this makes no sense, it stays with you for days after.
