Pianist Vijay Iyer's compositions are ferociously paced and fractured with a sense of urgency that informs each note he plays. His inventive takes on M.I.A. and Stevie Wonder are just as thrilling as standards like the West Side Story classic "Somewhere," which he imbues with a chilling sense of urgency. This high-energy, adventurous spirit should serve him well in tonight's work-in-progress collab with English-professor-turned-spoken-word-performer Mike Ladd, as the two mine the psyches of war veterans to craft these unique dream works.

Harlem Stage says…

Participate in our WaterWorks series in which you become a part of the creative process.

Holding it Down is a work-in-progress showing by composer/pianist Vijay Iyer and poet/performer Mike Ladd, with Iraq veteran/poet Maurice Decaul. Continuing on the heels of their groundbreaking collaborations, In What Language? (2003) and Still Life with Commentator (2006), Iyer & Ladd will collaborate directly with young American war veterans of color from the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to create a new work with the working title Holding it Down.  After interviewing veterans of color specifically about their dreams - be they harrowing, surreal, or mundane- Iyer & Ladd will build an evening of music, poetry, and song around soldiers' dream narratives.

Featuring special guest musicians Pamela Z, Guillermo E. Brown, Liberty Ellman, Okkyung Lee, and Kassa Overall.
