Peter Gelb's decision to bring in theatrical directors to revive the Met's classic repertoire has paid off nicely, introducing opera lovers to innovators such as Laurent Pelly, whose 2007 production of Gaetano Donizetti's opera is currently being revived with 36-year-old Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez's star-turning performance intact. It's the same role that made the late Luciano Pavarotti decades ago. Pelly's WWI-set staging moves the action up a century, coaxing amusing performances from his talented cast in this light-hearted cautionary tale about the pitfalls of raising a girl in the army. Legendary New Zealand soprano Kiri Te Kanawa plays the Duchess of Krakenthorp in what may be her swan song.
