In this fascinating exhibition, the Tibetan Buddhist belief that death provides an important opportunity for spiritual enlightenment is explored. Upon the moment of physical death, a 49-day period during which 100 symbolic deities appear to the deceased in a series of visions, begins. In order to attain nirvana, these visions must be recognized as mere illusions. Otherwise the cycle of rebirth continues. On view are about fifty works of art that illustrate the bardo experiences that confront one upon death. Reconstructed peaceful and wrathful shrine rooms put these works in fascinating context.
