The Studio Series offers an opportunity for research and development in a creative residency format, providing resources of time, space, and a commission. The Studio Series is a research laboratory for physical explorations and new movement investigations with a focus on process, not final performance/product. The "performances" are intended to be informal public showings to share ideas with an audience in the intimate working space of the studio. Studio Series artists are curated internally by the Artistic Director in conjunction with Programming staff and guest curators from Urban Word NYC and Dance Theater Workshop's season artists.
Kathy Westwater ‘s choreography has been seen in many places in NYC since 1997, including Dance Theater Workshop, Brooklyn Museum, Franklin Furnace, Danspace Project, Movement Research at Judson Church, Joyce SoHo, and P.S. 122. She is greatly informed by past studies with Simone Forti, Dana Reitz, and Sara Rudner; by ongoing studies of Feldenkrais with Barbara Forbes and Yoga with Patti Bradshaw; and by her work from 1991-1999 as a performer with choreographer Merián Soto and visual artist Pepón Osorio. In addition to teaching at Sarah Lawrence College since 2002, Westwater has also taught at Trisha Brown Studio, 92nd Street Y, Bennington College, and Movement Research. She received an MFA from Sarah Lawrence and a BA from William and Mary where she studied mathematics and political economy.
