Bassist Ben Williams recently received a Master's degree from the Juilliard School under the instruction of Ben Wolfe won first place at the 2009 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. He was awarded a $20,000 Scholarship and a recording contract with Concord Records. The competition was judged by such iconic bassists as Ron Carter, Dave Holland and Christian McBride. Since the Monk competition, he debuted his band at the Jazz Gallery in New York, which received a strong review in the New York Times:
"The bassist Ben Williams took several long solos in his first set at the Jazz Gallery on Thursday night, and each one felt more like an entitlement than an indulgence. Partly that was because of his tone: warm and sonorous, with a satisfying wooden resonance. Partly it was because he formed such well-considered ideas, rolling from chorus to chorus with an effortless flow. And partly it was because of the staunch rapport of his quartet, with the saxophonist Jaleel Shaw, the pianist Gerald Clayton and the drummer Justin Brown. Mr. Williams, in his bandleading debut, had set himself up to shine." - Nate Chinen http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/31/arts/music/31williams.html?_r=1&scp=2&sq=%22ben+williams%22&st=nyt
Ben is currently touring with Stefon Harris and Blackout, and is featured on the group's latest release Urbanus, which was recently nominated for a Grammy. He can also be heard on the newly released album by the Marcus Strickland trio entitled Idiosyncrasies, and will also be featured on the upcoming release by the Jacky Terrasson trio.
