South African artist William Kentridge paints stark images of apartheid, colonialism, and totalitarianism. Through a wash of pastel and charcoal, he imbues each work with a powerful and uneasy ambivalence that catches beauty even in the darkest situations. This major retrospective features 100-plus works across a wide spectrum of media, with many of the animated films, drawings, prints, and theater models on display for the first time in the US. The Metropolitan Opera gallery also displays a large array of the creative "sideways explorations" he made during the run-up to the highly anticipated production of Shostakovich's The Nose.
