“When three modern-day music buffs hole up in a wintry cabin to seek warmth and wet their whistle, they find themselves peering deeper and deeper into the brief life and lean times of Franz Schubert, by way of the his song cycle, Winterreisse. The three pianists who created and perform Three Pianos — Rick Burkhardt, Alec Duffy, and Dave Malloy — frequently hand off the music mid-song to one another, while wheeling and whirling three pianos into every imaginable tableau. All the while, they energetically make music, make merry, and wrap their heads around the genius that was Franz Schubert.”
Ontological Theater says:
Three Pianos is a theatrical explosion of Franz Schubert’s Winterreise song cycle by three major artists of the indie theater community – composer Dave Malloy of Banana, Bag & Bodice, playwright/director Alec Duffy of Hoi Polloi and composer/playwright Rick Burkhardt of the Nonsense Company. Rachel Chavkin directs.
