The full title of Susanna Centlivre's Restoration comedy is The Wonder: A Woman Keeps a Secret! Director Rebecca Patterson's adaptation shortens the 1714 play's title while retaining its biting, bawdy humor. If anything, the pompous idiocy of the male characters is heightened by the all-female Queen's Company. Menfolk remain clueless about the bonds of female friendship and The Wonder's ladies are put through the ringer. The classical troupe's enthusiasm for this tale of two misplaced couples is infectious, quite literally spilling into the audience, and its trademark practice of performing barefoot is put to good use in the intricately choreographed pantomimes that connect the scenes.
