92YTribeca says…

Part of the Closely Watched Films series.

Trapped in a suffocating marriage, legally unable to divorce his wife, Marcello Mastroianni has only one socially acceptable option – set her up with another man, then shoot her as an adulterer. But in the hot 1960's Sicilian summer, how's a man supposed to get up the energy to arrange an honor killing? It's so much easier to wear sunglasses, smoke cigarettes and watch yourself starring in La Dolce Vita.

Director Pietro Germi's Academy-Award winning satire is a brutal take on Italy’s most dearly held misogynies, as well as a beautifully photographed dream of old world style. It's like Mad Men in the boot of Europe.

Host Elliott Kalan will discuss the double-edged danger of committed satire, how a director can make or destroy a comedy and the Theory of Gomez Addams.

Director: Pietro Germi. 105 min. 1961. 35mm.
