Paul Verhoeven's futuristic extravaganza envisioned a world at the mercy of powerful technology corporations; the fact that its leading man would become the "Governator" of the Golden State only makes the fight against corporate fascism all the more amusing. Legendary sci-fi writer Philip K. Dick's short story "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" inspired screenwriter Dan O' Bannon and the themes that he and Verheoven explore in regards to the commodification of memory feed our inner philosopher and make it easy to not only forgive the occasional outlandish plot twist, but to revel in it.
