There is no better balm for hard times than the music that soothed a similarly cash-strapped set in the early-20th century. In a nod to Black History Month, Arts World Financial Center and New York Opera Society dole out two free showcases for George Gershwin and Scott Joplin, enlisting opera stars Christina Clark and Kenneth Overton to fill the Winter Garden in soul-stirring style. On the bill are Joplin's ragtime-tinted Treemonisha and George Gershwin's barrier-breaking American folk opera Porgy and Bess, two titles that are sure to resound with those of us who might also have plenty of nothin'.
