Richard Strauss' richly constructed opera-within-an-opera combines a savvy comment on the art of creating with some of the most fantastical creations ripped from the lore of Greek mythology. Nymphs and gods share the spotlight with artists in the throes of a last-minute rehearsal, as they all weather the struggle one of their characters, Ariadne, who waits for either love or death — whichever comes first! — to sweep her off her feet.
