Henri Murger's 1849 novel Scenes De La Boheme is a bountiful source for inspiration. Among the better-known adaptations are the Lillian Gish/John Gilbert silent film, Baz Luhrmann's bowdlerized yet recognizable Moulin Rouge, Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer and Tony-winning Rent, and Puccini's La Bohème. For this latest incarnation, director Jeremy Bloom created a stage version using Brian Rady's adaptation of the libretto from Puccini's opera. While it may seem risky eliminating music from an operatic box-office draw, Bloom, like his predecessors, knows that this story of love, illness, class conflict, and starving artists continues well beyond those 525,600 minutes.
