With either an exhibit or a performance at two of the most classically prominent art museums in Manhattan, it does appear that William Kentridge is taking over New York City.  His visual art, featuring descriptive depictions of apartheid, colonialism and totalitarianism - all aspects of the turmoil his country, South Africa has and had been dealing with for years - can be seen at the Museum of Modern Art until May 17th.

His contribution to the Metropolitan Opera's production of The Nose, based off of the short story by Gogol, is that of both director and designer. The production runs almost entirely through the end of March.

William Kentridge has steadily been building his world renown and can be seen now in his conversation at the New York Public Library.

LIVE from the NYPL says…

Acclaimed artist William Kentridge makes his Metropolitan Opera debut directing the company premiere of Shostakovich’s The Nose, based on the short story by Gogol. Kentridge rose to international prominence in 1997 when his work was included in Documenta X in Kassel, Germany, and in the Johannesburg and Havana Biennials, which led to a series of solo exhibitions worldwide. His work combines drawing, animation, filmmaking, and collage. The Met premiere of The Nose coincides with a major retrospective of Kentridge’s work on view at the Museum of Modern Art.

Paul Holdengräber is the Director of Public Programs - known as LIVE from the NYPL- for The Research Libraries of The New York Public Library.
