Note:
Phoebe Gloeckner's original artwork for The Diary of a Teenage Girl is on exhibit at 3LD's gallery space. There is also a collection of funky '70s memorabila (Bette Midler LPs, TIME's cover story on Kubrick's Barry Lyndon) set up outside the performing space.
Marielle Heller adapts and stars in this raw and powerful take on Phoebe Gloeckner's autobiographical graphic novel. Diary centers on 15-year-old Minnie's affair with her mother's boyfriend and, as Minnie, Heller's harrowing transformation from an immature girl to a serious young woman in '70s San Francisco is a convincing one. Heller and co-directors Sarah Cameron Sunde and Rachel Eckerling do not pass moral judgement: Minnie's drug problems, a neglectful and narcissistic mother, and being raised when the nuclear family was being redefined are treated with equal importance. The result of growing up too fast with so much pain are apparent in the panels projected on 3LD's walls during the performance.
