“Ángel Corella is celebrating 15 years with American Ballet Theatre and his new Corella Ballet Castilla y León. The forever-adorable danseur noble has made good on his promise of establishing the first professional ballet company in his native Spain and their first NYC program is an adventurous one, with Corella's String Sextet set to Tchaikovsky’s Russified Souvenir de Florence. Christopher Wheeldon's DGV is another memory piece danced to Michael Nyman while Vladimir Vasilyov and Natalia Kasatkina’s Sunny Duet and Leonid Lavrovsky's Walpurgisnacht are examples of those histrionic hothouse ballets of the Soviet era. And, because this is a Spanish company, there is Maria Pages' flamenco duet Solea for Ángel and sister Carmen.”
NY City Center says:
Angel Corella's recently created Corella Ballet Castilla y León will have its U.S. debut at New York City Center, March 17 – 20. The engagement will feature the U.S. premiere of String Sextet, Mr. Corella's first choreographic work, set to Tchaikovsky's Souvenir from Florence. Corella Ballet, Spain's only classical ballet company, features acclaimed dancers from around the world, including Principal Dancers Herman Cornejo, Iain Mackay, Adiarys Almeida, Carmen Corella and Natalia Tapia; First Soloists Kazuko Omori and Joseph Gatti; Soloists Ashley Ellis, José Sales, Cristina Casa, Kirill Radev, Fernando Bufalá and Yevgen Uzlenkov; and Ángel Corella himself.
