Los Angeles painter Alex Couwenberg handles paint like a cross between an austere Minimalist and a high-end pastry chef, wielding the brush and/or palette knife with a firm pressure and restrained melodramatic flair. His abstract compositions of tertiary and quasi-naturalistic colors combine with surface textures ranging from the glass-flat to the nooked-and-crannied, creating a dreamy, slightly nostalgic floating world.
