“It's easy to see why Giacomo Puccini's popular opera has endured the test of time and become a staple of practically every company around the world — even inspiring Jonathan Larson's mega-hit musical Rent. Its memorable arias effortlessly capture the inner passions of the star-crossed bohemian lovers who we can't help but root for throughout the four rapturous acts. Franco Zeffirelli imbues the production with the same gravitas that made his Romeo and Juliet film a classic, and, unlike some other operas, this show never drags. For those that have seen Rent, it's fun to see where it veers from the source, primarily the strippers and drag queens.”
The Metropolitan Opera says:
Anna Netrebko stars in the most popular opera in the repertory. Piotr Beczala, who signaled his arrival as a top lyric tenor in last season’s Lucia di Lammermoor, sings his first Met Rodolfo in Franco Zeffirelli’s legendary production. Gerald Finley is Marcello, opposite Nicole Cabell and Ruth Ann Swenson alternating as Musetta.
