Atlas Obscura's raison d'être is to showcase the "eccentric, bizarre, fantastical, and out-of-the-way places" that get omitted from guidebooks. The website was created in 2009 by modern day explorers Dylan Thuras and Joshua (little brother of Jonathan Safran) Foer. Today marks Obscura Day, with 50 esoteric events simultaneously happening around the world — from Serbia (visit a Tesla Museum) to Sydney (embark on a glow worm tunnel expedition). Get a weird look at NYC itself —including more subway-tunnel tours! — but sign up early.
