Despite every indignity the Joads suffer in John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, the writing is lyrical, almost musical. This family's tale of survival makes the 1939 Pulitzer Prize winner ripe operatic material, which is what composer Ricky Ian Gordon and librettist Michael Korrie realized. For this concert version, excerpts are read by Jane Fonda, whose father Henry so memorably played Tom Joad in John Ford's starkly beautiful film. Baritone heartthrob Nathan Gunn sings Tom, while Tony winners Victoria Clark and Christine Ebersole play Ma Joad and Mae/Waitress. Two excellent singing actors, soprano Elizabeth Futral and tenor Sean Panikkar, are also in this stellar cast.
