Full-throttle punk (or Green Day's poppy spin on the genre) surges through the Great White Way in American Idiot, the Broadway rendition of the band's rock-opera album of the same name. Choreographed chaos is the order of the day, as a petulant, polished cast spews youthful rage in perfect pitch, belting out teenage angst and thundering the floorboards in skilled step. The show's collective force sweeps everything up in its fervor, propelling the rocky path of Johnny, the story's anti-hero and don't-wanna-be-an American idiot (played with fitting intensity by John Gallagher Jr.). With his bus ticket out of the dreaded suburbia, he takes theatre seat-holders along for a riotous ride.

St. James Theater says…

American Idiot tells the exhilarating story of a new generation of young Americans as they struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world, borne along by Green Day's electrifying score. With an 8 member onstage band and a cast of 19 led by Tony Award-winner John Gallagher, Jr., this high-octane musical includes every song from the acclaimed album American Idiot, as well as several songs from the band's Grammy Award-winning new release, 21st Century Breakdown.
