If there's a Shakespeare character who was born to sing, it's got to be Hamlet. Between his father's murder, mother's shacking up with his uncle, and girlfriend problems, he's overflowing with enough teen angst tinged with uncontrollable rage to fuel several shows. Thankfully, veteran directors Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser are bringing back Ambroise Thomas' rarely seen work after nearly a century-long absence from the Met's repertoire. The duo has dozens of operas under its belt, including a recently lauded production of Cinderella in London, signaling that we're in for a treat.

Metropolitan Opera House says…

The Met says:

Two of Shakespeare's unforgettable characters come to life in Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser's new production. Simon Keenlyside is "stunning," delivering a "haunting portrayal" in the title role, the New York Times says. Marlis Petersen "brings a luminous voice and winning grace to her performance" of Ophélie. Thomas's score "could not have a better champion than the conductor Louis Langrée."
