Screen and Scores is a special collaboration between Bachanalia (Nina Beilina, Music Director / Founder) and Dmitry Trakovsky, the acclaimed director of Meeting Andrei Tarkovsky, which recently premiered at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. The concert begins with a short film written and directed by Trakovsky which explores the language of music in cinema. This documentary will include excerpts from Andrei Tarkovsky's powerful film The Sacrifice as well as Ingmar Bergman's masterpieces Persona and Fanny and Alexander. Bachanalia will follow with a performance of works featured in scenes from these films: Bach's jubilant E Major Concerto (Persona), the dolorous aria Erbarme dich from the St. Matthew Passion (Sacrifice), and Schumann's monumental Quintet for Piano and Strings (Fanny and Alexander). In celebration of Schumann's 200th birthday, Bachanalia will close the evening with newly commissioned arrangements of Schumann's exquisite lieder by award-winning American composer Raphael Fusco.
