Sonja Frisell's opulent staging of Aida is the perfect anecdote for those growing weary of the Met's minimalist new productions. Giuseppe Verdi's evocative score drives this romantic thriller that pits Princess Amneris against her slave — it's ancient Egypt after all — as they vie for the attention of warrior Radames. All the sordid action takes place on Gianni Quaranta's larger-than-life sets that bring to mind those grandiose pyramids, and there are enough twists throughout the three-and-a-half hour epic to remind you from where the soap opera originated.

Metropolitan Opera House says…

The Met says:

The Met has assembled a cast of powerful voices to match Aida’s epic scale, which in this grand production uses every stage lift in the house. Shanghai-born soprano Hui He makes her Met debut in the title role, with Dolora Zajick as her rival for the affections of Salvatore Licitra’s Radamès. Carlo Guelfi is Amonasro, and Marco Armiliato conducts.
