“Lenin’s Embalmers takes what could be a gruesome — or simply dull — topic and transforms it into a riveting dark comedy. Based on the same-named book and written by award-winning Canadian playwright Vern Thiessen, this tale attests to the maxim that the truth is stranger than fiction. It starts in 1924, when two Jewish scientists (and sometime rivals) become reluctant partners in a high-stakes experiment to preserve Lenin's body for public display. They are successful, but the two men get snarled up in Soviet politics and, in the ultimate example of the bleak humor that pervades this snappily staged production, Lenin’s body outlasts its embalmers.”
The Ensemble Studio Theatre says:
Russia, 1924. Two scientists are called upon to do the impossible: preserve the body of Communism's greatest leader or face death themselves. A dark comedy about the science of death and the death of science.
