Part of the series Hammer to Nail Presents Misunderstood Gems: 2000-2009.

The one-two punch of M. Night Shyamalan's Lady in the Water and the book about the making of that film, The Man Who Heard Voices: Or, How M. Night Shyamalan Risked His Career On A Fairy Tale, might very well be the most giddily insane example of Hollywood and by extension, artistic-delusion. Shyamalan based the movie on a bedtime story that he and his young daughter came up with during an impromptu pre-sleep daze and, boy, does it show. Paul Giamatti is Cleveland Heep, a hapless doctor-turned-handyman at an apartment complex who can't seem to get his life back on track. But when a ghostly pale Narf shows up on his doorstep, he must rise to the occasion and carry her fifteen steps to the pool out back, where she can swim to safety."—Michael Tully, writer/editor Hammer to Nail

Director: M. Night Shyamalan. 110 min. 2006. 35mm.
