“Performance art crew VisionIntoArt is behind the Ferus series, pulling together nicely mismatched lineups from all walks of art. Tonight, dance troupe MEI-BE WHATever performs a new site-specific version of their signature work, Cinderella Toe Jam II; Royal Pink. Inspired by the Chinese practice of foot binding, the work literally wraps the female dancers in tight plastic-wrap mini-dresses, sleek but constrictive. And then… the dresses come slowly off, unspooled over the course of an evening like rustling, cellophane butterfly cocoons. It's weirdly sexy stuff, for sure. Speaking of sexy: Mexican singer Magos Herrera, who's worked with jazz cats Bill Frisell and Bobby McFerrin, closes the night with cuts from her new album Distancia.”
Galapagos Art Space says:
MEI-BE WHATever is a New York City based dance ensemble fusing media technologies with contemporary movement. Exploring relationships between the body and technology, investigations culminate in the staging of multi-media events. Royal Pink explores restriction through the body, resulting in a dance that reveals an unusual and unexpected beauty – the transformation of body, lives, movement. Grammy nominated Magos Herrera will be presenting the music of her newest album "Distancia"/Sunnyside Records, Distancia, which became the #1 Itunes in the Jazz category. Like Luciana Souza and Claudia Acuna, she is a world-class jazz vocalist in the literal sense of the word.
