Dead or Alive features completely organic work. That is, all of the art was once alive, as a plant or animal. Some of the artists have been delayed in their installation due to the Icelandic volcano crisis, but some have also found workarounds, like Tanja Smeets who installed her piece, Red Lentils, via Skype. While there is the "ick factor" to such materials like cockroach wings, weasel skulls, and mummified frogs, the art transcends the material. Some notable works not to miss: Simen Johan's tufted sculptures layered with feathers, insects, and a dangling bat; Nick Cave's Soundsuits, and Billy Grace Lynn's Mad Cow Motorcycle, for which she reassembled a cow skeleton over a working motorcycle. Before its installation at MAD, Grace Lynn rode the cow bike through Miami and stopped at a McDonald's to order a burger.

Museum of Arts and Design says…

Museum of Arts and Design says:

Dead or Alive showcases the work of more than 30 international artists who transform organic materials and objects that were once produced by or part of living organisms--insects, feathers, bones, silkworm cocoons, plant materials, and hair--to create intricately crafted and designed installations and sculptures. Once-living parts of flora and fauna are recombined and rearranged into works of art that address the transience of life, and all that is elegant and alarming about the natural world.
