Flux faced a crisis when denied performing rights to JB. And though it would have been worthwhile seeing this adventurous group perform Archibald MacLeish's recasting of The Book of Job, they now offer something more meaningful. In less than three months artistic director August Schulenberg wrote his own modernized biblical epic, Jacob's House. Nothing about it looks or sounds like a rush job. The protagonist's wrestling match with an angel is but one episode in this memory play about a family feud. Schulenberg makes several convincing moral judgments of his own, chronicling this American family's rise in fortune. Combining a dysfunctional family with old-time religion and mythic America makes for rich metaphors and juicy theatre. Flux wrestled outside forces and won.

Access Theater says…

Flux says:

When 3 siblings argue over a strange provision in their father Jacob’s enigmatic will, allegiances shift as dangerous secrets are uncovered. This darkly comic riff on the biblical story of Jacob explores the legacies of violence and power and the cost of wrestling with the divine.
