Sebastian Junger has been touted as the new Hemingway — the guy who's given new life to adventure non-fiction. His first taste of fame came in 1997 with his international bestseller The Perfect Storm. Since then he's raked in a National Magazine Award, reported on the subject of blood oil from Nigeria, and directed a documentary feature film, Restrepo, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance for a domestic documentary. Did we mention he's also a co-owner of one of our fave hang-outs, the Half-King? Stick around for the post-event mixer at 9:15 (this is a separate event and requires a ticket) and ask Junger himself about how he wound up in a photograph, at less than one-year-old, with the Boston Strangler.

92nd Street Y (92Y) says…

In his breakout bestseller, The Perfect Storm, Sebastian Junger created "a wild ride that brilliantly captures the awesome power of the raging sea and the often futile attempts of humans to withstand it." Now, he turns his brilliant and empathetic eye to the reality of combat—the fear, the honor and the trust among men in an extreme situation whose survival depends on their absolute commitment to one another. His on-the-ground account follows a single platoon through a 15 month tour of duty in the most dangerous outpost in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley.
