While not quite an established art form, the book trailer is gaining headway as a discipline to keep an eye on. At least that's what the people over at MobyLives will have us believe. They've released the finalists for their book trailer awards, and there are some heavy contenders in the running. Gordon Lish talking about bullfighting in the trailer for his Collected Fictions is worthy almost of Errol Morris. And is that really Thomas Pynchon's voice as Doc Sportello in the trailer for Inherent Vice? While some wow us, like Gail Carriger's Blamelss trailer, still others are legit contenders for the category "Least Likely to Sell the Book Trailer," though they're funny and surprising (like Tao Lin's trailer for Shoplifting from American Apparel). We've made our selections and await the big night. Have you?

Note:

This is a real awards ceremony, folks, complete with red carpet. Formal attire is required! For a more in-depth look (featuring Zach Galifianakis), head over to Flavorwire.

The Griffin says…

Melville House says:

Yes, that’s right. We will judge you. Well, we’ll judge your book trailers, which one might consider reflections of you (and your work). In order to take this judgment (what if I don’t win?!), you’ll probably want a stiff drink (or four). So now you are all officially invited to MobyLives’ 1st Annual Moby Awards ceremony, hosted by Mr. MobyLives himself, Melville House Publisher Dennis Loy Johnson. Join the rest of the publishing industry (and some fabulous guest presenters, including novelist John Wray) for an evening of celebration and debauchery. Formal attire required and yes, there’s going to be a red carpet.
