In his telling, Shakespeare doesn't share that King John signed the Magna Carta or speak of his nemesis Robin Hood. Instead, he focuses on his murderous ascension to the throne and disastrous reign. What distinguishes King John from the better-known War of the Roses plays is that Shakespeare never exaggerates John's sociopathic behavior — because he doesn't have to. Director Jordan Reeves and the Guerrilla Shakespeareans adhere to this and do a fantastic job with material that could easily become a bloodbath. This nine-actor troupe is a strong one, but two performances stand out. Jordan Kaplan's John is a political animal whose empty rhetoric sounds eerily familiar. Constance, mother of the rightful heir, loses everything; Ginger Eckert gives her a heartbreaking awareness that she has.

Note:

King John signed the Magna Carta in 1215. One of the Bodleian Library's four copies of the Magna Carta is on display at the Morgan Library until May 30.

Medicine Show Theatre says…

Guerrilla Shakespeare Project says:

In the shadow of victorious crusades and overbearing mothers, the usurping tyrant King John grasps too tightly for greatness as he fights family and morality to keep his crown. The Guerrilla Shakespeare Project brings its lean and hungry style to Shakespeare's earliest history play.
