“Footie fans, rejoice! The 2010 World Cup is finally here. Expect the city's ethnic enclaves to explode into all-out soccer mayhem (Little Brazil and Koreatown in particular were wonderful madhouses last time around), and for businessmen — and just maybe some online-publishing editors, hint, hint — to duck out for key matches and a pint, all month long. Tons of bars and venues in all five boroughs have special hours, viewing schedules, and drink prices for the South African World Cup; SOB's, the Paley Center, the Gowanus Yacht Club, Fontana's, and the Village Pourhouse are just a few. Shoot and score, NYC!”
Note:
Plan your viewing/drinking! Here's the match schedule.
Fifa says:
32 teams compete for the title at venues within the host nation over a period of about a month – this phase is often called the World Cup Finals. A qualification phase, which currently takes place over the preceding three years, is used to determine which teams qualify for the tournament together with the host nations.
