Mariko Mori is an internationally renowned Japanese artist. In her video work, Kumano, she appears as a mysterious spirit, a shaman, and a floating angel. The work represents Mori's consistent interest in belief systems, including Shintoism, Japan's indigenous religion, and Buddhism, its adopted religion.
The exhibition presents this work alongside selected sculptural images of the divine from Asia Society's Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd collection to explore the constantly changing yet persistent tradition of visualizing and aspiring toward a higher consciousness.
