“For many, Baltimore conjures up visions of the gritty city and abandoned harbor-side warehouses depicted in The Wire. But for those in the know, Baltimore is more John Waters than waterfront crime scene. With its Victorian architecture, happening Hamden neighborhood, thrift and record store bonanzas, and Drive-In movie theater, there are plenty of reasons for New Yorkers to head on down for a visit. Even better, Flavorpill readers who mention "jauntsetter" can get 20% off last-minute bookings at the already affordable Wilson House, where room rates start at just $90/night.”

As John Waters once said: "I would never want to live anywhere but Baltimore. You can look far and wide, but you'll never discover a stranger city with such extreme style. It's as if every eccentric in the South decided to move north, ran out of gas in Baltimore, and decided to stay." For many, Baltimore conjures up visions of the gritty city and abandoned harbor-side warehouses depicted in The Wire. But for those in the know, Baltimore is more John Waters than waterfront crime scene. Indeed, if you've ever seen Water's movie Pecker, you've got a pretty accurate introduction to some of Baltimore's quirkier charms: photo-worthy Victorian architecture, thrift and record store bonanzas, antique shops and art galleries aplenty, and vintage diners and old-man bars that would please even the most jaded Williamsburg loafer. Baltimore even has its own Drive-In movie theater, which is reason enough (for us anyway) to head on down.
