A young, wealthy playgirl comes to a small California town to pursue a man and ends up trapped in the nightmare of birds going wild. Voted seventh most terrifying film of all time in a British poll in 2006, the film is indeed scary. The idea that a normally lovely part of nature could suddenly turn vicious gives it the power to seem real. Hitchcock wisely abandoned using a film score in favor of electronic screeching to build tension and mimic the frantic birds' cries.
