“Featuring skads of interviews and rare concert footage, the insightful and exuberant documentary film Downtown Calling chronicles the simultaneous rise of, and unlikely love affair between, the flourishing Downtown punk and Uptown hip-hop scenes in 1970s NYC. The fast-paced film includes hilarious and little-known observations (and music) by OG and new-school luminaries from the late, great Malcolm McLaren to Mos Def, as well as the producers, artists, club-owners, and famous fans who were in the mix and/or have carried on the influence of these tumultuous times into new generations of musical innovation. The flash-point of the film is the story of how Blondie's controversial and wildly popular "Rapture" came about, and came to encapsulate the unlikely, game-changing love affair between two wildly different, but equally hard-core artistic communities.”
Note:
Screening ticket price includes admission to the afterparty at Santos Party House.
New York International Latino Film Festival says:
In the mid-1970s the "greatest city in the world" was teetering on the edge of total chaos. A crumbling economy, rampant crime, and massive housing corruption gave way to a city in crisis. Yet out of the economic and social strife that held the Big Apple hostage, a new culture of musicians, artists and thinkers emerged downtown that would forever change the world. Downtown Calling not only documents, in vibrant detail, the evolution of New York City's fertile music and art subculture during this period, but shows how its collective output continues to drive the international fashion, art and music scene today.
