“Rick Moody has said that The Four Fingers of Death is a sequel to the novel that launched his literary career, The Ice Storm. The Ice Storm, if you recall, is a realist novel about a family falling apart in the Connecticut suburbs. The Four Fingers on the other hand, is about a failed mission to Mars in the near future, the first people to colonize the planet, their tribulations, and the lone survivor of the mission — a four-fingered hand, which returns to Earth to find a situation rather dystopian. The novel, a "novelization" of a 1963 horror film the Crawling Hand, is rendered in an absurd style reminiscent of the work of Kurt Vonnegut. But, despite these differences, The Ice Storm and The Four Fingers both involve horror films from the '60s, and depict a Thanksgiving dinner. This time on Mars!”
