You can quibble over whether Wife to James Whelan is a romance, comedy, or drama — or some mash-up of the three — but either way, the Mint Theater's production of this play is worth seeing. Written by Teresa Deevy, a largely forgotten 20th-century Irish playwright, the play follows an ambitious young man who leaves his small town (and his girlfriend) to seek his fortune, and returns home seven years later as an eligible bachelor with his own business. The characters all possess a satisfying complexity, and considering that Deevy was deaf, her gift for dialogue is all the more remarkable.

The Mint Theater says…

James is determined to make his mark. Nan thinks he should be content with what he has. When James takes a prized job in Dublin, he leaves Nan behind. James asks Nan to wait for him, but she makes no promises. We next see James seven years later, sole proprietor of a new enterprise in Kilbeggan, the “Silver Wings” Bus Service. Three women might be ‘Wife to James Whelan’: Nan, his true love, Kate, his true friend, and Nora, who appeals to his ambition—but can anyone or anything bring him happiness?
