“There are a few more days left to catch 83-year-old British cinematic contrarian Ken Russell in-person at Russellmania, a hit parade of his racy works from the late '60s and '70s. In addition to appearing on Celebrity Big Brother in the UK and having a phone with which to dial up God, Russell has conceived some fiercely excessive and outlandish films dealing with religion and sexuality. Among those screening this week are the rarely seen The Devils (1971) which includes a nun orgy and stars Oliver Reed as Father Urbain Grandier and Vanessa Redgrave as a vengeful sister, The Who's Tommy (1975) and The Boy Friend (1971), a fiction film about a struggling acting troupe that features Tommy Tune and Twiggy in her big-screen debut.”
The Film Society of Lincoln Center says:
England’s answer to Fellini will always be regarded as British cinema’s greatest enfant terrible. But at 83 and still going strong, he’s also a British national treasure. In the 1960s and 70s Russell trashed the staid conventions of cinematic good taste, forging a subversive cinema of outrageous excess and mischievous iconoclasm. At time when the British film industry was all but moribund, this fearlessly controversial and flamboyant writer-director pulled off an unmatched nine-film winning streak, which we present for your delectation. Join us for six personal audiences with the legendary Ken Russell, British Cinema’s madcap visionary maverick.
